Clarksville sits on the Western Highland Rim, where silty topsoil lies over clay and limestone. Dig a footing off Rossview Road and you often hit chert and rock a foot or two down. Montgomery County ground is mostly silt loam over clay and limestone residuum. Baxter, Mountview, and Dickson silt loams cover much of the county. Dickson soils sit on the ridgetops and carry a fragipan 18 to 36 inches down. Water drains slowly through that hard layer, so it backs up above it.
That is why a Clarksville lot can look dry on top and still pump mud under a machine. We plan the cut around it. Rough grade first, let the ground shed water, then come back for the finish work. We set elevations with a grade laser during site prep and grading so water runs off the right way.
Chert and rock show up close to the surface on ridges and side slopes here. An excavator with a thumb pulls rock, roots, and stumps in the same pass. Footings, foundations, building pads, and utility trenches all get dug through that same ground.
Clarksville is one of the fastest growing cities in Tennessee. It has led the state in year over year population growth. Sango, in the southeast corner of the county near I-24 Exit 11, has taken on heavy new construction. Rossview and Kirkwood, out toward Exit 8, are doing the same.
The roads are being rebuilt to keep up. Needmore Road is being widened from Tiny Town Road toward the Spring Creek bridge. Rossview Road is set for widening from Warfield Boulevard out to Keysburg Road. Out at Exit 8, the county corporate business park keeps adding plants and warehouses.
Most of that new housing goes onto wooded or farm ground that has never been built on. Those lots need the trees down, a pad cut, a gravel driveway in, and trenching for water and power. Builders and general contractors bring us a lot of this work, and much of it repeats.
Clarksville sits where the Red River runs into the Cumberland River. Spring Creek, the West Fork Red River, Passenger Creek, and Yellow Creek all drain this ground. Both rivers rise fast after a long rain, and the low ground along them floods.
Away from the rivers, the problem is smaller and closer to the house. Clay soil holds water against a foundation instead of letting it pass through. Yards stay soft for days and crawl spaces stay damp. French drains and regrading the elevation carry that water away from the house.
On slopes and construction sites, moving water carries dirt right off the job. Tennessee requires a construction stormwater permit and a control plan when a job disturbs an acre or more. The City of Clarksville runs its own stormwater program on top of that. We are an approved erosion control contractor with TDEC, and erosion control is a regular part of the work here.
