The old building comes down, and the ground gets cleared

Demolition takes an old shed or barn off your property and leaves the ground clear. We tear down outbuildings, detached garages, carports and other small structures, and the debris gets loaded out for disposal. It is part of the excavation and land work we do from Woodlawn, just west of Clarksville. We cover Clarksville and Montgomery County and travel to Nashville and Franklin.

Many old buildings sit in brush and trees that grew up around them. When that is the case, land clearing comes first so there is room to work. Then the teardown can start. Estimates are free, so call or text (931) 572-8673.

Shed Removal and Barn Demolition Near Clarksville

Our demolition work is sized for the old buildings on home lots and farms. That means sheds, barns, detached garages, carports and other outbuildings. Some are falling in, and some sit right where something new should go.

An excavator with a thumb pulls the building down and picks up the pieces. The debris gets sorted and loaded into a roll-off container as the work goes. Once the building is gone, the ground where it stood gets cleared.

If you need a demolition contractor for something bigger than an outbuilding, call and describe it. We will tell you if it is a fit. For shed demolition and barn removal, the free estimate starts with a look at the building.

Before an Outbuilding Comes Down: Utilities and Permits

Before a building is demolished, the property owner or an agent notifies every utility with a service connection in it. Montgomery County will not issue the demolition permit until each utility gives a release. That release says the utility's meters and connections are removed or sealed and plugged. The county's form lists Clarksville Gas and Water or a utility district, and Clarksville Department of Electricity or CEMC.

Montgomery County needs a building permit whenever someone will demolish any building or structure. Its demolition packet also asks for the state asbestos notification letter. That notice is due to TDEC's Division of Air Pollution Control at least 10 working days before work starts. Inside Clarksville city limits, demolition is its own city permit, applied for through the city's Self-Service Portal.

Tennessee's 811 rules apply to demolition as well as digging. Whoever is doing the demolishing gets a locate ticket from Tennessee 811 first. The notice goes in at least 3 and not more than 10 working days ahead, so buried lines get marked.

Where the Demolition Debris Goes and What Comes Next

Once loaded out, the debris goes to a construction and demolition landfill. Montgomery County's packet says all demolition debris is disposed of by methods TDEC's solid waste division approves. Burning it is out, because Tennessee's list of what not to burn names demolition debris and building material. Improper outdoor burning can lead to fines up to $25,000.

In Woodlawn, Bi-County Solid Waste runs its landfill off Dover Road. The site holds a Class I landfill for household waste and two Class III landfills for construction and demolition. Bi-County charges private individuals $10 a cubic yard for demolition waste, and commercial loads pay the current gate rate.

With the debris gone, the spot is ready for its next use. Some people want open ground back. Others want a new barn or shop in the same spot, and leveling it is site prep and grading work.

FAQ

Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about demolition across Clarksville, Middle Tennessee and the Nashville area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (931) 572-8673

Do I need a permit to tear down a shed or barn in Montgomery County?
In Montgomery County, yes: the county wants a building permit whenever someone will demolish any building or structure. Inside Clarksville city limits, demolition is a separate city permit. Whether a small shed needs the full county packet is a question for the building department. The paperwork is laid out in a guide to demolition permits in Tennessee.
What happens to the debris from the old building?
It gets sorted and loaded into a roll-off container as the building comes down. From there it goes to a construction and demolition landfill, such as Bi-County's off Dover Road. It stays off the burn pile, because Tennessee's list of what not to burn includes demolition debris.
Do you tear down barns and detached garages, or only sheds?
Barns and detached garages are part of the work, along with carports and other outbuildings. Old barns often sit in brush and trees, so clearing that can come first. For anything bigger than an outbuilding, call and describe it, and we will tell you if it is a fit.
What about asbestos in an older building?
The state's asbestos notification form says it is required for a demolition project even if no asbestos is present. Whether a small shed needs that form is a question for the county building department. We leave asbestos testing and removal to specialists. Tennessee requires the person who inspects a building for asbestos to be accredited by the state.
How much does it cost to tear down a shed or barn?
It depends on the size of the building and what it is built of. Access, utility connections, the amount of debris and landfill fees all move the number. The work on the ground afterward counts too. We look at the building and give you a free estimate, so call or text (931) 572-8673.
Can you level the ground for a new building afterward?
Yes. Once the old building is gone, the ground can be graded level for what comes next. If a new building is going up, digging for the new foundation can follow. A new barn or shed there needs its own county building permit.
