Forestry mulching opens up overgrown ground without digging it up. We run a skid steer with a forestry mulcher head. It grinds brush, saplings, and undergrowth into mulch right where they stand. What you get back is open ground with a mulch layer over the top.

The cutting and the cleanup happen in one pass. The mulcher head grinds standing brush and saplings and spreads the material where it falls. That mulch layer stays on the ground and breaks down into the soil over time. The dirt underneath is left the way it was.
Most of this work is fence lines, trails, and wooded ground people want opened up. Trails get mulched wide enough to drive a truck or a tractor through. If a lane needs a base to carry weight year round, that becomes a gravel access road. Under a stand of hardwoods we can thin the understory and leave the mature trees standing.
The woods around Woodlawn and Clarksville are mostly oak and hickory with heavy brush underneath. Chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, and multiflora rose take over fence rows here, and Tennessee lists all three as pest plants. Privet comes back from the roots after it is cut.
Bush hogging is the other half of this work. A brush cutter on the skid steer knocks down tall grass, weeds, and light brush across open ground. That is the right tool for a field that got away over a season or two. For woody stems and saplings we switch to the mulcher head.
Pasture left alone for a few years fills in with briars and rose thickets that crowd out the grass. Multiflora rose was once planted for living fences and erosion control, and now it runs wild in Tennessee. Autumn olive and privet move into the same field edges. Cutting the field back gets grass growing again and puts the ground back to work.
Fence lines and field edges get the same treatment where a mower cannot reach. Open edges make it easier to see a fence and get to it for repair.
Mulching grinds what is above the ground and leaves the roots in place. That works well for thinning, trails, pasture, and sight lines. It also keeps the soil intact, which matters on a slope. The mulch acts as a cover while grass comes back up through it.
A build changes the answer. If a house, shop, or driveway is going in, the stumps and roots have to come out of the ground. That is a land clearing job, where an excavator with a thumb pulls the stumps out. Mulching first still helps, because it lets you see the lot before the heavy work starts.
Rain is the other thing to plan around. Middle Tennessee gets close to 50 inches a year, and the clay here holds water. A mulch layer keeps a bare slope from washing while the grass takes hold. On construction sites and roadways that job gets bigger, and we handle erosion control there too.
