Underground utilities run under almost every new build. Water lines, electrical conduit, sewer lines, and septic lines all need a trench before anyone hooks them up. We dig that trench, bed the line, and backfill it once the pipe or conduit is set. It is part of the excavation work we do out of Woodlawn, just west of Clarksville.
Most utility trenching rides along with a bigger job. A pad gets built, a driveway gets cut, and the lines go in before final grade. We also run trenches on their own, like a new water service or a line out to a shop. When the lot still needs shaping, site prep and grading happens on the same visit.

Water line installation starts with the trench. We open it from the meter toward the house, deep enough to keep the line below the frost line. The bottom gets an even base so the pipe lays flat and does not sag between high spots.
Electrical conduit runs the same way, at the cover depth the electrician's code calls for. Sewer and septic lines are different, because gravity does the work. Those trenches need a steady fall, so we set the grade with a laser.
Septic lines get the same trenching, and that is where our part stops. A licensed septic installer sets the tank and the field. We do the digging and the backfill, then clean up the ground.
Before a machine touches the ground, the existing lines have to be marked. Tennessee 811 is the state's call before you dig service, and it is free. State law asks for at least three working days of notice, which is 72 hours not counting weekends and holidays.
The utility companies then come out and paint or flag what they own. Red is electric, blue is water, green is sewer, and yellow is gas. The ticket is good for fifteen calendar days from the start date on it.
The marks show the general path of the line. Tennessee law sets a tolerance zone of the line's width plus two feet on each side. We slow down inside that zone and uncover the line before we go deeper.
On a new house, the utility trenches usually come after the pad and before the final grade. We can dig them while we are already on site with the excavator. That saves a second trip and keeps the ground from being torn up twice.
Builders and general contractors bring a lot of this work. They tell us where the lines go, and their plumber and electrician make the connections. We handle the digging and the backfill on our end.
Existing properties work the same way. A water line to a barn, conduit for a shop panel, or a sewer replacement all start with a trench. If the yard also holds water, french drains and yard drainage can go in while we are there.
